The Digger Extensions Mistakes You Might Be Making

  • Bigger sizes do not equal better efficiencies – one of the biggest mistakes contractors make when it comes to excavator buckets is using buckets that are too big for the job at hand. Basically, the common thought pattern is that buckets of bigger sizes can move greater amounts of material, and thereby, that they are more efficient than the smaller bucket sizes. However, the truth is that efficiency is maximized when the bucket is just the right size for the job. As an example, if a trench of twenty-five inches is needed, you should be using a bucket that has a size of around thirty inches. A bigger bucket than this would mean that you are excavating more than you need: basically, you are spending more than is necessary in terms of money, time and energy. Of course, a bucket that is smaller than necessary is also wrong, for the obvious reasons.
  • Lack of awareness of the materials – before beginning any one job, it is important to understand the nature of the materials or soils you will be digging. This will decide which type of scrap shear or other extension you should be using for the project. An important point that should always be clarified is the density of the material. The density of a material directly affects its weight with regards to a unit volume, which means that different materials will reach the maximum capacity of the digger in different volumes. Basically, what is to be understood from this is that the size of the bucket should also take into consideration the density of the material – denser materials will not benefit from having larger buckets (as they can exceed the capacity of the excavator).
  • Improper use of duty cycles – as you would know, there are different varieties of buckets – of different resistances. The standard bucket is good for standard procedures, such as digging sand and similar soft materials. However, the more abrasive materials will need more resistant buckets. One of the biggest mistakes that you can in fact make is using the standard bucket for the more demanding jobs, and ending up having to replace the plates and repairing the buckets all too frequently. Instead, invest in different varieties of buckets – the standard, heavy-duty and the severe-duty.
